After yesterday's post referring to the cultural norms that are prevalent in our society - the worldview that eliminates absolutes in favor of people defining their own truth based on feelings rather than facts...maybe all of that wasn't exactly said yesterday...but it was in mind when I posted :) , I was encouraged by my daughter Rachel. We were assembling some ice cream sandwiches and just talking. Rachel is reading the book, "John Adams" by David McCullough, and she was telling me her new favorite quote.
"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."- John Adams
John said this as he was defending some British soldiers in their trial for crimes (I guess that would be murders) commited at the Boston Massacre. His speech in defense of the soldiers resulted in their acquittal.
Ah...it was a blessing to hear her talk about the book, the quote and her appreciation of...TRUTH!

ReplyDeleteIsn't it great when you have those "Moments" and you realize they've caught on to something really important!!! It's like when teaching them to read and they finally catch on to "joining the sounds together"! :-)

I know what you mean about being blessed by our blessings; I know that when I see and hear our children enthusiastically receiving, participating in and sharing those things we have believed and known to be the best things, it is to us "the ultimate". My kids and I have all read "John Adams" by David McCullough and loved it. John and Abigail became great friends of ours. My oldest son Nathan and My daughter Marie got to go hear David McCullough speak several years ago at the University here. It was quite a treat for them (and me to get to hear about it). He really spoke his mind at the decline of so many of the good things in our country and in the Universities. He was very refreshing. They also got to hear Winston Churchill's Grandson speak, and Dnish D'Souza (not sure of the spelling on that one) who used to be a part of Regan's staff, and is a Christian writer and wonderful master of debate.
